HUNTINGTON'S DISEASE SOCIETY OF AMERICA INC. MID-ATLANTIC REGION

Timothy and Karen O'Neil's Fundraising Page

Timothy and Karen O'Neil's Fundraising Page

Greetings family, friends and those guilty by association, thanks for visiting our fundraising page!  For the second year we are attempting raise money for Huntington's Disease.  Last year we raised $10,350.  Thank you to everyone who donated and supports HD.

We have are hoping to begin a Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) Chapter in Virginia. The University of Virginia’s Neurology Department is one of 21 sites in the United States recognized by the HDSA as a Center of Excellence (COE) to treat Huntington’s Disease (HD) patients and their families. We started a UVA HDSA fundraising committee earlier this year. We had hoped to have two actual fundraising events this past year, but the poor economy dashed our plans.

Please consider donating to the HDSA virtually through this page! We realize that many folks are short of disposable income during this economic downturn. Any donation is welcome. We have used the FirstGiving.com site ourselves several times in the past and found it to be simple and secure. If you prefer to send a check, please contact us. The fine people at the HDSA tell us that company matching programs have been very helpful over the years. We will be delighted to send you the HDSA contact information. Not only will your dollars support the HDSA’s COE at UVA, but the HDSA has a donor matching program which will match every dollar donated 1:1 with a dollar donated to HD research. Scientific research is critical to discovering successful treatments for HD.

Huntington’s is a genetic disease which has 50% chance of being passed onto the affected person’s children. HD affects 1 out of every 10,000 Americans. A simple way to describe HD is a combination of Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease on steroids with a dash of schizophrenia. HD generally affects folks in middle age, 30 to 50 years old. For more medical details on HD, please check out http://www.utmb.edu/neuro/huntington.htm.

We would like to recognize the members of the committee for donating their time, friendship, and support:

Tammy Campbell, Powhatan
John Russell, Esq., Midlothian
Marge Rogan, Albemarle
Ken Cady, Charlottesville
Debbie Persinger, Fluvanna
Ron Biringer, Powhatan
John Jenks, Richmond

We would also like to thank two people who are using their celebrity to support HD fundraising, Trey Gray, drummer for Brooks and Dunn, and Charles Sabine, NBC News correspondent.
