Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star addresses the needs of children aged seven to fourteen who want someone who will share one-to-one time with them two or four times a month. Through age-appropriate activities children and caring adult mentors learn they are not alone through our Little Steps, Big Futures Educational Enrichment Program.
Although Big Brothers Big Sisters is not a tutoring program, a Texas study over 20 years showed that 87% of students mentored in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program graduated from high school (compared to frequently-published four-year graduation rates of 50-60% in major metropolitan school districts). For the 2009-2010 year, 97% of the youth enrolled in Big Futures either graduated from high school or were promoted to the next grade level.
We continually strive for donations to underwrite program costs. It is only because of the commitment of our donors that we can firmly maintain the goal that no child is ever turned away from the program due to an inability to pay.
Every donation makes a difference for a child and family in need.Your charitable dollars will impact Big Brothers Big Sisters services:
•$1 equates to: a package of pencils to help us get our children ready for school
•$10 equates to: a state-wide criminal background check for our volunteers
•$50 equates to: covers the personal interview assessment of each volunteer
•$100 equates to: allows us to provide holiday gifts for a family of four children which includes board games and/or books
•$500 equates to: sustaining an existing match between a mentor and a child for one year!
•$1,000 equates to: helping us make and support a new match between a mentor and a child for one year!
•$10,000 equates to: helping us make and support 10 new matches between a mentor and a child for one year!
Researchers found that after 18 months of spending time with their Bigs, the Little Brothers and Little Sisters, compared to those children not in our program, were:
•46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
•27% less likely to begin using alcohol
•52% less likely to skip school
•37% less likely to skip a class
•33% less likely to hit someone
Littles were more confident of their performance in schoolwork and getting along better with their families.
Together let's make a better America!
Give to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Thank you for your gift!
