Twelve members of the Special Tactics Community will run in Kentucky's Bourbon Chase 200 mile Relay, September 28th and 29th, 2012. In 2010 and 2011 the Team was successful in raising over $18,000 for the SOWF and would like to raise the bar this year. The Bourbon Chase Relay is an unique, overnight adventure in which the Team will cover 200 miles of scenic byways along the famous Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Starting near Bardstown, the Bourbon Capital of the World, and wrapping up with a festive finish in downtown Lexington, the Horse Capital of the World. The Team of 12 is made up of Air Forces Special Operations Combat Controllers, Pararescuemen, Special Operations Weathermen and Special Tactics Combat Support. Each member of the Team will run three legs over distances varying from 3 – 8 miles. Everyone on the Team has directly felt the pain and loss of fellow Special Operations Operators and this is our way to give back to the families!
The Warrior Foundation is currently committed to providing scholarship grants to more than 900 children of the approximately 800 Special Operations personnel who have given their lives for their country since 1980, including those who died fighting our nation's war against terrorism as part of "Operation Enduring Freedom" in Afghanistan and the Philippines as well as "Operation Iraqi Freedom."
Currently, 190 children of fallen special operations warriors have graduated from college.
Since 2005, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation has provided immediate $3,000 cash grants to personnel seriously wounded in the line of duty. Once notified of a special operations soldier, airman, sailor or Marine hospitalized with a severe injury, the SOWF immediately sends funds to the service member (or his/her designated recipient) so family members can immediately travel to be at their loved one's bedside.
Last year, the SOWF, through the generosity of our donors and fundraisers, provided $4.8 million in scholarship grants, financial aid, counseling and family support. The SOWF administrative overhead is only 5.25%!
