In my early 20's I discovered a very curious looking "freckle" that my friends assured me was nothing. However, I kept an eye on this suspicious little spot and sure enough, over time, it began growing and changing color like a weird anatomical mood ring. The dermatologist agreed with my friends that it was highly unlikely that this spot was anything other than a freckle but to be sure, and to ease my mind, we would have it biopsied. It turned out that this mysterious freckle was actually melanoma.
Lesson learned - tanning beds are dangerous and sunscreen is not, actually, the enemy. Now that I am more aware of the reprecussions of my actions, I get regular dermatological screenings and only buy cosmetics with SPF protection and I'm happy to say that in the last eight years I have been free from any additional melanomas.
I am running to raise awareness. Skin cancer is not an old folks' condition; it is an every folks' condition.
Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
