THE NATIONAL BLOOD CLOT ALLIANCE

ABWA Fundraising Page

ABWA Fundraising Page

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page!

The Association of Black Women Attorneys ("ABWA") is dedicated  to building relationships and empowering our community.  In that regard, ABWA has teamed up with the National Alliance for Thrombosis and Thrombophilia ("NATT"), a patient led organization that works to prevent and raise awareness about blood clots.

Recently, Dr. Garth Graham from the Office of Minority Health at the Department of Health and Human Services focused on recent data that African American's are at a higher risk to develop blood clots than other communities.  “One person dies every five to six minutes from *deep vein thrombosis ("DVT") or a *pulmonary embolism ("PE") related event in America, and some groups such as African Americans are at a significantly higher risk of developing these conditions,” said Dr. Graham, who lost his sister to PE. “Many of the causes of DVT are entirely preventable and easily treatable, so it’s crucial that people understand their level of risk and take action to reduce this. Improved awareness and access to treatment can save a great number of lives." Approximately 350,000 to 600,000 Americans suffer from DVT and PE each year, and at least 100,000 deaths may be directly or indirectly related to these diseases. Our very own Traci Wilkes Smith serves on the Board of Directors of NATT and this issue hits home for her because she suffered from a  DVT and PE a few years ago.

MARCH IS DVT AWARENESS MONTH:

ABWA'S community service committee will walk a 5K in Prospect Park, Brooklyn on Saturday, March 20 at 11 am to help spread the word about blood clots.

Please join us on that day and become apart of TEAM ABWA by creating your own fundraising page here to help us meet our goal or make a donation to this page by clicking "Sponsor me now".  You can click on TEAM ABWA above and see all of the team members individual pages and read their personal stories!!

Additionally, on Thursday, March 25 from 6-8 pm we will gather at Georgia's a hair, body and soul boutique in downtown, NY, www.georgiany.com, to celebrate our walk and fundraising for NATT as well as educate attendee's about the risk of blood clots.

Please join us on that evening. If you would like to join us at either event please contact our committee chair, Yomi at aajaiyeoba@aol.com, 917-755-5886 or email Traci at traciwilkes@yahoo.com.

Thanks for your support and please forward this to anyone who you think may want to contribute.

LET'S STOP THE CLOT

*Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is blood clot that usually occurs in the leg, most often on one side, although it can happen in other parts of the body.

*If the blood clot dislodges, it can travel to the lungs and cause a blockage known as a pulmonary embolism (PE) or lung clot.
