So who are the Sistas of the Traveling Sneakers? The name came about when LaVerne, Wilma, Iris and Yvonne walked the Portland Marathon in 2007. It occurred to us that this is what we do....we travel around in our sneakers. I'm sure that any fashion conscious individual out there will be aghast. Be consoled to know that we are only in our sneakers 40% of the time....okay, no, make that 60% of the time. We have done marathons from Honolulu to Ireland and across the USA.
We are an eclectic group of women from Barbados (Gwenyth), Grenada (Carol), Haiti (Freda), Jamaica (Yvonne), and the USA (Wilma and LaVerne). What unites us is our belief in God, a sense of adventure and a desire to be an influence to others who want to have a positive impact on their health.
And then we found out about Tusk Trust and what they are doing in Africa and decided to add fundraising to what we already love to do. It just makes sense. So on June 30, 2012 we will be participating in the Safaricom Marathon in Kenya. This marathon is different from the others in which we have participated. It is run/walked in the Lewa Wildlife Sanctuary, a huge refuge that began years ago as a last place for rhinos in East Africa. Oh yeah, we are going to be doing this in the rhino, giraffe, elephant and other wildlife home turf. Every step we take will help these and other species to survive in their natural habitat.
Tusk is dedicated to helping local communities manage their wildlife sustainably using ecotourism and livestock management. Funds are given to villages that are proactive in building safe local water supplies and schools. Tusk has projects in 17 countries in Africa protecting species as different as sea turtles and giant sable antelope. Many of the projects they fund become self sustaining and are managed by local residents. Check them out by going to www.tusk.org.
We would greatly appreciate your support of us and Tusk with a donation. We've committed to raising $6,000 for Tusk. What's awesome is that we know where the money will go and the good it will do. With the support of our family, friends and co-workers, we can meet our goal before we leave in June.
