This winter during New Years instead of vacationing like most college students would during this time of year; I will be embarking on a once and a life time opportunity. I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro departing on December 27, 2011 to support an amazing non-profit organization by means of fundraising. The non-profit organization is Flying Kites, which provides high quality residential care to Kenya’s most desperate orphaned, homeless and abused children on the brink of poverty. Flying Kites is not only an organization, but an orphanage as well as a school for these children. (http://www.flyingkitesglobal.org/)

There are over 2 million orphaned children in Kenya and over 60,000 children living on the streets. Children living on the streets are trapped in a cycle of poverty and despair from which it is all but impossible to escape. Many “street” children sniff glue and other hallucinogenic solvents to reduce the hunger pangs. Meanwhile, too many girls living on the streets are forced into a life of prostitution and slavery. Flying Kites cares for homeless, orphaned, and abused children in an extraordinary way. The children who come to live at our Center, Flying Kites Leadership Academy, will experience the highest quality of childcare, have access to excellent medical services, and receive a first class education.

Flying Kites is one of the many organizations I believe that can truly help make a difference not only in Kenya, but globally. Therefore, I have committed to participate in one of the fundraising Adventure Challenges to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this New Years. My personal fundraising goal is $7,000 and I am asking everyone who has the same beliefs as I to consider sponsoring me for this event.
