This will the be 4th year that Marti and I have participated int he Polar Plunge. We have always had a lot of fun and have raised money for the Special Olypics South Carolina. While I knew I was raising money for a good cause, I didn’t really get involved enough to see how good of a cause it actually was.
During the fall of this year, I had the opportunity to be a golf coach to four athletes every Thursday night. We were preparing for the fall games that took place in Greenville SC. Golf has always been a big part of my life but it took on a whole new meaning when I started spending my time with these 4 young adults. As the attached letter from Barry Coats indicates, I think the dedication put in to the training and improvement that each athlete was able to attain, had a significant impact on their lives. As it turned out, they won the gold, silver and bronze medals.
The experience had a large impact on me. First, I had a lot of fun. It is hard to find a better group of people than the athletes and their families. Second, I found a new sense of confidence and self worth by helping me realize that I can have a positive impact (however small) on someone’s life. Third, I made some new friends. I have heard similar comments from almost everyone that has volunteered in the Special Olympics program.
Please take a moment and make a donation for this great organization (and to make Marti and me jump in the ocean) !!!!
