Hattie carthan community farm Fundraising Page

Thank you for visiting The Hattie Carthan community farm/ markets fundraising page!

Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support  our fundraising efforts.

Background:

Across the United and States, rates of obesity and diabetes are increasing dramatically, particularly within lower-income, African-American, and Latino communities.  In New York City neighborhoods like Bedford Stuyvesant in Central Brooklyn where a third of residents live in poverty, more than 12% of adults have diabetes, compared to 8% nationwide.  In these settings, a growing body of research points to the intersection between low rates of consumption of healthy foods – such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains – and limited access to healthy choices as driving disease rates.  Less than 8% of the primarily African-American and Latino residents in these communities report eating the recommended five or more servings of fruits or vegetables per day; twenty percent report eating none at all. The Hattie Carthan community farm/markets are a community solution to the issue of poor nutrition and food insecurity in our community.

Fundraising cause:

In May 2011, a few volunteers mobilized by Hattie Carthan V.P Yonnette Fleming set out to revitalize a neighborhood abandoned lot in order to create a small farm that could help them grow more local food. With limited assistance from supporting green groups the farm grew and distributed over 5,000 pounds of food and processed 2.5 tons of community waste in its first growing season. The new farm is a community cultural hub where Bedford Stuyvesant residents gather to learn about growing and preparing food and healthy soil

We seek your assistance to continue our work of food justice in the Bedford Stuyvesant communnity.

In 2012 we aim to continue building our new herb farm , to create an herbal apothecary on the farm where youths and neighborhood residents can learn about herbalism ,increase healthy eating programs and grow environmental and economic justice in our community by educating and empowering more youths of color to work in urban agriculture.

Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think is interested in growing minority  and youth participation in agricultural and land projects.  Hopefully they might want to donate too!
