- 6 MONTHS is usually all we need to get a child up to then level of education where he/she can pass the entrance exam to enter the national school system at the grade appropriate to their age.
- 100% of the children we will be able to place are in the national school system within the first year.
But what becomes of them when we finally let go (after two years of monitoring and participation after they have left our little schools)?
70% stay in school
5,000 lives have been improved due to this effective way of gathering impoverished children and preparing them for the educational system and a better life. Because we know it works we will continue to expand our programs and touch the lives of ever more children and their communities. __________________________________________________
About Bruce Organization
Agenda SOS International (Bruce Organisation), is a non-governmental organization (NGO), working to create sustainable solutions the high percent of children in Latin America who are not getting educated, and to lifting abandoned mothers out of poverty. Our programs invest in human potential by providing each child and woman with a sound foundation that will encourage future success in school and in life.
Our program provides a necessary support for the child by way of education, building self-esteem and instilling discipline in the classroom. We also support the families through our social workers and help to pay some of the school fees to ensure that the child does not drop out again. In keeping with this focus, we have programs in education and micro-finance that create students out of child laborers and provide unemployed women the tools they need to become financially independent.
There are many needs in Latin America and among those needs, Agenda SOS Int'l (Bruce Organisation) addresses education. We work with a mix of foreign and peruvian volunteers to teach preparatory classes to children who are not going to school - (whether they had to quit for some reason or have never studied.) Generally children are not in school because they have dysfunctional family structures, are working, or their parent(s) lack the money to pay the ongoing fees of enrollment, school supplies and uniforms.
After 2 years in our comprehensive program, 70% are still attending school. The other 30% who are not in the school that they were placed into at the end of 2 years, have either returned to their families or moved and are untraceable after that point.
All children in the program get an education! Unfortunately, 15% of the children cannot be expected to enter the national school system due to mental or physical disabilities. There is a lack of infrastructure to accommodate these children in the national system. These children stay in our learning centers and leave with educational skills and an informal certificate of accomplishment. Whenever possible, they are enrolled into a trade school, thereby expanding their skills.
