Every week, Dilma Yac teaches fun art lessons to 800 Mayan children in Guatemala through the Mayan Arts Program (MAP). Their weekly MAP lessons are some of the only opportunities these children have to let their imaginations blossom and learn about their own cultural heritage. Building their creativity and esteem through MAP helps them immeasurably throughout their lives.
Join Dilma & MAP's Circle of Support by giving through Firstgiving today. By contributing to this cause, you can help make sure these children always everything they need for their arts education: art supplies, lesson plans, and -- most importantly -- their Mayan teacher, Dilma.
Please consider making a regular monthly donation to ensure that the children of Guatemala will always have the support they need. It only takes 100 people giving $10 a month to sustain Dilma & MAP's full programming for one year.
Goals of the Mayan Arts Program include:
- Empower the marginalized indigenous Mayan children of Guatemala through an ambulatory arts education program.
- Encourage creativity, adaptability, and the ability to seek alternatives and exercise agency in personal and civic life.
- Preserve and share Mayan culture and knowledge through art projects in Mayan and North American classrooms.
MAP is a program of the Richmond-based nonprofit the Highland Support Project (HSP) and its sister nonprofit in Guatemala, the Highland Women's Association (AMA).
