Igor Zadorozhny is a triple amputee from Moscow, Russia who completed the 2006 NYC marathon on a hand cycle. Igor is a Major of the Russian Special Forces who sustained multiple injuries in the war in Chechnya resulting in the amputation of both legs and right arm. He is still in active duty. Igor is married and has a son. He continues to try to live an active lifestyle, despite being confined to a wheelchair and having only the use of one arm.
His current prosthetics are very uncomfortable and are not fitted well. Unfortunately these were the best prosthetics he had access to. The Supreme Commander of the Special Forces had to get involved to authorize payment for one of Igor's prosthetic legs. Igor can only walk for about 20 minutes on his current prosthetics. On November 7, 2006 Igor visited Eric Schaffer, certified prosthetist and Phil Kreuter, physical therapist at A Step Ahead Prosthetics & Orthotics in Long Island, NY, who generously donated their time and provided a free prosthetic consultation.
Igor was very upset to learn about the state of his current prosthetics that need to be replaced in order for him to improve his function and return to a more active lifestyle Additionally he was very frustrated to learn about what he could and should have if prosthetics were fitted right and the right types were used. Sponsors will be required to help Igor secure the funds needed to replace the prosthetics he currently has with better fitting and more functional prosthetics for all 3 of his missing limbs.
Dick Traum, the founder of the Achilles Track Club, and Mary Bryant, the Vice President organized and funded Igor's trip to the NYC for the marathon. Dick Traum also encouraged Igor to try the marathon with just one hand and generously donated a hand cycle to Igor. Igor completed the marathon in 3.5 hours with just one hand. This was his first Marathon.
