Our personal message:
Welcome to the Moving for the Marathon home page.  Here you can follow the progress of the Imago Dei students as they complete the 26 miles as well as make tax-deductible, secure donations.  The contributions will be used to pay for running shoes, athletic wear, and race fees for the students.

Please go to www.imagodeischool.org for more information about Imago Dei.

You can learn more about the Boston Marathon at www.baa.org  My bib number was 12367 and you can check my results from that page.

As you know, I ran the Boston Marathon on April 16th and I asked the students of Imago Dei to help me train.  Imago Dei is an independent, tuition-free Episcopalian school for low-income children that is based on the successful model of the Epiphany School outside of Boston.  The students are in school 11 months a year with an extended day and week.  The students not only have a traditional curriculum but they also have daily physical education, attend multi-denominational worship services, receive two hot meals plus snacks, attend enrichment classes in the community, and have proctored homework time.  The hope is that by educating the whole child, Imago Dei can break the cycle of poverty and provide the students with unique experiences.  Over the past few months, the students walked or ran short distances 3-5 times a week to reach a total of 26 miles.  They have been charting their progress in the classroom and on a course map.  In addition, the students designed and decorated the shirt that I proudly wore in Boston.  After the marathon, the Imago Dei Running Team continues to train and will make its debut in a local race. The students are very excited and committed to this training program.

Training Log
TUCSON 5000

May 20, 2007 - Four students met me for the race looking sharp in their Imago Dei shirts.  This was a longer run - 3.1 miles.  One of the boys, who is destined to be a sprinter I think, took off with the lead pack at the beginning.  He tired in the middle but sprinted off again once the finish line was in sight.  I ran/walked with him, Krista Miller ran/walked with another student and Harris in the jogger, and Reverend Anne walked with two of the girls.  Everyone completed the distance and seemed to enjoy themselves.  One family came down to cheer and the siblings and students participated in the kids' race afterwards.  They were rewarded with ribbons and candy bags.  As an added bonus, the students who came to the race got to choose the activities for Spirit Week at school this week.
This was the last official running event of this school year.  We will start the program up again in the fall with new running goals, new races, AND new fifth graders.

CINCO DE MAYO RUN

May 6, 2007 - Three of the students braved the 6 am meeting time and came to the Cinco de Mayo 2 mile fun run.  Ms White, Reverend Anne, a few of my friends (thanks Sylvia, Kassie, and Shelley!), as well as two of the families came down to be the cheering squad.  We had one volunteer run/walk with each of the students and they all did really well.  One of the boys ran almost the whole way.  And we looked great in our new Imago Dei running shirts!!!
After the race, we got some food and hung out with the rest of the runners.  The race director called the students up to the stage in recognition and said a little bit about the program.  They had a great time!
The next race is the Tucson 5000 on May 20th.

WEEK FIFTEEN: One mile walk or run daily
May 1, 2007 - The last student completed the 26 miles on Thursday!!!  I brought down the Boston Marathon shirts as a reward and they were very excited.  I also brought their new running shorts that just came in - baggy black mesh.  They were a big hit.
Saturday, Ms White and I took four students and a prospective student to the track camp at Sunnyside High School.  Several of the Sunnyside cross country runners and their coaches put on an afternoon program to help middle schoolers with their running technique.  The high school students were wonderful with the younger students and we all learned a lot.  Afterwards, there were participation prizes and dinner with the team.  One Imago Dei student came up to me to ask if it was always like this after races.  When I said yes, he smiled and said it was pretty fun.  All of the students who went had a great time.
The students continue to go to the park daily for a mile walk/run.  Regardless of how they choose to get around the track, they have all gotten faster and stronger.  We have our first race this Sunday - the two mile fun run at the Cinco de Mayo race.  I love this race because it ends with breakfast burritos and the Cholla High School mariachi band.  And we should all have our Imago Dei Middle School running shirts in time for this race!

WEEK FOURTEEN: The goal remains a one mile walk or run daily

April 23, 2007 - I got many congratulations from the students when I got to the school this morning, they had been tracking my progress on the web last week.
We had a guest this morning - Jeanne Snell, one of the owners of Fleet Feet and a former middle school cross-country coach, came down and gave the students some pointers on running.  She had some great tips for the students and had most of them jogging around the track.  We may be getting more pointers at the Sunnyside Middle School Track Camp this weekend.
ALMOST ALL OF THE STUDENTS HAVE COMPLETED THEIR 26 MILES!!! There is one student who is 2 miles shy after being out of school for a week but she will finish in the next few days.  I am so proud of what these students have accomplished over the past several months!

RACE WEEK!
April 19, 2007 - This has been an very exciting and action-packed week for all of us.  Last Friday, we took the students to Sabino Canyon for a tram ride and hike.  They took the tram to mile marker 2 and then hiked up to mile marker 3 and back down to the end.  There was a little water play break in the middle of the hike and a lot of dumping sand out of the shoes on the way back down.  But everyone had a good time and we are going to try another Sabino hike, with a picnic lunch, later in the spring.  After the hike, the students gave me my marathon shirt which they had all decorated and put their names on.  It said Imago Dei Middle School on the front and Support Our School on the back, with the letters painted red and yellow.  They they all printed their names in different colors.  Very cool.
Monday, the article about the running program came out in the Arizona Daily Star.  You can read the article online at http://www.azstarnet.com/altds/pastframe/sports/178626.
Monday was also race day.  The morning was horrible, with gusting winds and pouring rain but the weather calmed somewhat to make for decent running conditions.  It was an amazing experience to be out there with all of those other runners going through beautiful towns with cheering crowds lining the course.
Tuesday, I went to Epiphany and got to tour the school.  What an inspiration to see where they are 6-7 years after they first opened!  The school is gorgeous and the two students who showed us around clearly have a tremendous amount of pride and love for their school.  I could see some of our students in our tour guides and it was so great to see where Imago Dei might be in the next several years.
Even though the marathon is over, there are still a lot of running events to come. Monday morning, I will be back at Imago Dei with Boston Marathon t-shirts for the students as a reward for completing their marathon.  Jeanne Snell, a former middle-school cross country coach, will also be down there to work with the students on their running technique.  We have been invited to a middle-school track camp at Sunnyside High School on April 28th.  Our first race is May 6th, the two mile run at the Cinco de Mayo 10K and our Imago Dei running shirts should be ready!

WEEK TWELVE: The goal for this week is 3 1-mile walks or runs
April 9, 2007 - The students all completed their mile again today and one student ran two miles with Miss White.  I was with two girls, one of whom was feeling tired this morning.  The other student was encouraging her the whole way - "keep going","you can do it", "come on".  It was really neat to hear the support between the two students.
We are taking a walking/running field trip to Sabino Canyon on Friday, which will be a nice outing them after three days of standardized testing.  We will take the tram to mile marker two and then do a 2-5 mile jaunt.  It will be an educational trip as well, the tram drivers usually talk about the history of the canyon and the local flora.  The students will also be collecting stream water to look at under the microscope.
On a different note, the shorts and shirts are ordered and we have a local printing company to put the Imago Dei logo on the running shirts.  The shirts should be ready for the Cinco de Mayo race on May 6th.  If anyone is interested in purchasing Imago Dei t-shirts, please contact me at etholland@comcast.net.  I think they will be $15-$20 each.
This is the current mileage, including today:

S - 18 1/4 miles, 1 today
    A - 22 3/4 miles, 1 today
    A - 18 3/4 miles, 1 today

    H - 32 miles, 2 today
    P - 20 1/2 miles, 1 today
    H - 16 miles,  1 today
    M - 18 3/4 miles, 1 today
The story in the Arizona Daily Star is scheduled to run in the Sports section next Monday, April 16th (marathon day).  For those who do not live in Tucson, the website is www.azstarnet.com.  I will send out the official link when the story runs.

WEEK ELEVEN: The goal for this week is 3 1-mile walks or runs

April 3, 2007 - This was another big day because the photographer from the Arizona Daily Star came to the park and took pictures of the students as they completed their laps.  No word on the exact date of the article but I will post it as soon as I know.
The students all completed their mile today and Miss White said they have done at least a mile every day since I was last down there.  Their parents are going to find out more about the May races during conferences this week.  We have found a local company to make the running shirts, we are still working on the design.  We should be ready to place the orders for the shirts and shorts by the end of the week.  If anyone would like an Imago Dei running shirt, please let me know.

This is the current mileage, including today:

S - 16 1/4 miles, 1 today
    A - 20 3/4 miles, 1 1/4 today
    A - 16 3/4 miles, 1 today
    C - 21 1/2 miles, 1 today
    H - 29 miles, 1 today
    P - 18 1/2 miles, 1 today
    H - 14 miles,  1 today
    M - 16 3/4 miles, 1 today
The
students have lost some training time because of holidays and other commitments but they are doing a great job on the days when they are able to get to the park and all are meeting or exceeding their daily goals.  There is one student who has already completed over 26 miles and is now working towards 30 miles or more.  It is amazing to think what all they have accomplished over the past several weeks!

WEEK TEN: The goal for this week is 2 1-mile walks or runs and 2 1/2-mile walks or runs

March 28, 2007 - This was a big day because it was the students' first day back in the park since spring break.  Some said they did run over the break, which is great to hear.  They are behind on their training schedule but jumped right back in with 4 laps (= one mile).  As of today, they should have completed 18 1/2 miles if we had been able to stay on schedule.  I think the students should easily be able to make up the lost time, especially since their time to complete one lap is getting shorter and shorter.
There was even more excitement because Patrick Finley, a sports writer from The Arizona Daily Star, came down today to see the school and Moving for the Marathon in action.  A photographer will come down next week to take pictures and the story should run mid-April!
And one more positive note - we have a corporate donor.  TalkingRain Beverage Company (www.talkingrain.com) has donated 12 cases of flavored water and is making a monetary donation as well.  The students will be drinking this water after their training sessions and after the races in May.
We plan to have a table set up for the students at the races with Imago Dei banners that they have decorated so they have their own area to gather.  Everyone is welcome to come support the students during and after the races.

WEEK NINE: Spring Break

March 18, 2007- The students are on break this week but we encouraged them to keep getting out for about 10 or 15 minutes every day during this week.  We may take a hike in Sabino Canyon when they come back to enjoy the beautiful spring weather and make up some mileage.
The students have Creative Writing every week and have been reading poetry.  They recently read We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks and were asked to write their own poems.  Two poems jumped out at me, not only because they mentioned running but because they were written by two students ( H and A) who are not yet strong runners.
    We are smart.  We
    Know art.  We

    Want fun.  We
    can run.  We

    All sing.  We
    Have rings.  We

    Want school.  We
    Are cool.  We

    play straight.  We
    are great.

    We are smart.  We

    Love to run.  We

    Run far.  We
    Love the park.  We.

    Love Ms. White.  We
    Real cool.

WEEK EIGHT: The goal for this week is 4-3/4 mile walks or runs
March 12, 2007 - The jump to 3 laps was indeed no problem for the students.  Even walking, they are completing the laps more quickly then when they started.  We talked again about the races in May and the children are still very enthusiastic about participating.  We will order their race clothing in the next few weeks.

By today,  students should have completed 11 3/4 miles and we marked off that distance on the course map.  This is where they are, including today:

S - 12 1/4 miles, 3/4 today
    A - 14 3/4 miles, 3/4 today
    A - 11 3/4 miles, sick today
    C - 16 1/2 miles, 3/4 today
    H - 24 miles, 1 today
    P - 13 1/2 miles, 3/4 today
    H - 10 miles,  missed today
    M - 12 3/4 miles, 3/4 today

There is a sad note this week - two brothers have left the school and moved to public school so we are down to eight students.  I am hoping they will come cheer on their friends at the races.
Next week is Spring Break for the students and then we jump back into our last few weeks of the training program before the marathon.  The students are thinking about the design for my Boston shirt and will make it for me after their break.  I am very excited to see what they come up with!

WEEK SEVEN:
The goal for this week is 4-1/2 mile walks or runs

March 6, 2007 - The students remain eager to get to the park and complete their training laps.  The runners are easily completing their two (or more) laps and the walkers are jogging even more than last week.   There should be no problem  jumping up to three-quarters of a mile next week.
I encouraged the students to think about adding extra laps when possible because Spring Break is coming up and there will be missed days.   It seems like most students are already adding extra laps a few times a week.  I have also encouraged the students who are way ahead to consider setting new goals, like 30 miles or more for the student who has already completed 22 miles.  But I reiterated that this is not a race among the students to see who can complete the 26 miles first, the idea is to complete an individual goal whether it be 26 miles or 50 miles.

Almost all of the students remain at or ahead above the target.  By today, they should have completed 10 miles and we marked off that distance on the course map.  This is where they are, including today:

S - 10miles, 1/2 today
    A - 13 3/4 miles, missed today
    A - 11 3/4 miles, 1/2 today
    C - 15 1/4 miles, 3/4 today
    H - 22 miles, 1 today
    P - 12 1/4 miles, 3/4 today
    H - 9 1/2 miles,  1/2 today
    M - 10 1/2 miles, 1/2 today
    J - 6 miles, missed today
    E - 10 1/4 miles, missed today

WEEK SIX: The goal for this week is 4-1/2 mile walks or runs
February 26, 2007 - Last week was rodeo vacation so there were three missed training days.  This morning, a
ll of the students were present and excited to get to the track.  There was definitely more jogging than there has been over the past several weeks.
I shared my essay on running with the students after our run this morning.  I read it out loud and they all received copies.  I got a few questions afterwards (mostly about my prior bad habits) and I anticipate more next week.  We also talked about the longer term goals of the races in May.  I was turned onto running after competing in the Charlottesville 10-miler in 1995 and I am hoping that the races will help fuel the students' enthusiasm.
By today, the students should have completed 7 1/2 miles.  Most are still ahead of target but a few are behind with holidays and missed days.  There is plenty of time to make this up over the next several weeks.  Here are the latest mileage totals, including today:

S - 8 3/4 miles, 1/2 today
    A - 11 miles, 1/2 today
    A - 9 miles, 1/2 today
    C - 10 miles, 3/4 today
    H - 16 3/4 miles, 1 today
    P - 9 miles, 1/2 today
    H - 7 miles,  1/2 today
    M - 8 3/4 miles, 1/2 today
    J - 5 3/4 miles, 1/2 today
    E - 8 3/4 miles, 1/2 today

WEEK FIVE: The goal for this week is 3-1/2 mile walks or runs and 2-1/4 mile walks or runs

February 19, 2007 - Lots of bright new running shoes out on the track today!  The students were ready to get running as soon as we got to the park and everyone's goal was to try to complete both laps at a slow jog at the very least.  One of the students who usually walks jogged a whole lap without stopping - a first for her.  She then completed half of the second lap at a slow jog.  This was a huge accomplishment and I was very proud of her!
Almost all of the students remain ahead of target.  By today, they should have completed 5 1/2 miles and we marked off that distance on the course map.  This is where they are, including today:

S - 7 1/2 miles, 1/2 today
    A - 9 1/2 miles, 1/2 today
    A - 8 1/2 miles, 1/2 today
    C - 7 1/2 miles, sick today
    H - 15 miles, 1 today
    P - 7 3/4 miles, out today
    H - 6 1/2 miles,  1/2 today
    M - 7 1/2 miles, 1/2 today
    J - 5 1/4 miles, missed today
E - 7 miles, 1/4 (was late to the park)

I get a lot of questions from the students about why I run and why it is that I race if I don't win.  I have been mulling this over for the past several weeks and have written the following to try to explain why it is that I run:

I am a runner and a distance junkie.  Make no mistake, I was never a lithe cross-country runner.  I am a 35 year old formerly overweight, ex-pack-a-day smoker, now part-time pediatrician with two young children and a fickle knee who has coerced my body into submission. Since I started running 12 years ago, I have run six half-marathons; four (soon to be five) marathons, including Boston; and completed my first half-Ironman in October.
I am frequently asked why I run - meaning why do I run long distances? There are the obvious answers about health and fitness, and then the deeper answer about being an over-achieving oldest child.  But the real answer is that I believe that running, and indeed the ability to move under one’s own power, is a gift.
It is the gift of running out of Sabino Canyon with the sun setting in the west and a full moon rising in the east.  The gift of exploring neighborhoods in Tucson and other cities that I would have missed in a car.  The gift of dinnertime smells from homes on my route.  The gift of a double rainbow in the mountains at the end of a long evening run.  The gift of friendships forged and strengthened over the miles.  The gift of an outlet at the end of a long day or week.  The gift of a healthy lifestyle that I can model for my children and patients.  The gift of spending time with the students in my running program. The gift of racing surrounded by people who also love to run.  The gift of good food and music at the end of a race. The gift of my son running the last tenth of a mile and crossing the finish line with me.  The gift of a sense of strength and accomplishment at the end of a hard run.  The gift of an extra handful of M&Ms after dinner.  The gift of crossing the finish line hand-in-hand with my sister, who is back to running after being hit by a car.
But I have come to realize that the biggest gift is that of good health.  Two and a half years ago, my mother was almost crippled by her alcoholism and was in rehab for 6 months.  Today she is doing great but at that point, holding my son’s hand was enough to pull her off balance.  I watched my grandmother slowly deteriorate and become bedridden from her Parkinson’s disease.  My sister and one of my best friends have both been hit by cars while running and spent several painful months in physical therapy to recover their strength and mobility.  Any time I think I am having a bad run, I think of these people who have endured so much more and I realize how incredibly fortunate I am.  This thought gives me the energy and inspiration to finish my run.
So to those who ask why I run, the answer is because I can.

WEEK FOUR
: The goal for this week is 3 1/2-mile walks or runs and 2 1/4-mile walks or runs
February 12, 2007 - The daily mileage goal increased this week and everyone easily completed their two laps today.  One student, who has been a little reticent, completed three laps.  I have noticed that the mostly walkers have developed mini-goals for each lap - run for eight to ten fence posts and then walk for eight fence posts.
The big news for this week is that we went shoe shopping!!!  We took the children to the Running Shop (www.runningshopaz.com) where they were each fitted for new running shoes.  We also bought running shirts and hats for them to wear during their daily runs.  The students were very excited, one refused to take off his new shoes and shirt for the rest of the day.  A huge thanks to Sharon, Amanda, and Kraig for all of their help!
The students are still ahead of their training goal.  By today, they should have  completed 3 1/2 miles.  All have completed at least 4 1/2 miles and are already completing at least 1/2 mile daily.
Here is what they have done so far, including today:
    S - 6 miles, missed today
    A - 8 3/4 miles, 1/2 today
    A - 6 3/4 miles, 1/2 today
    C - 6 miles, sick today
    H - 11 1/4 miles, 1 today
    P - 6 miles, 1/2 today
    H - 4 1/2 miles,  1/2 today
    M - 5 3/4 miles, 1/2 today
    J - 4 1/2 miles, missed today
    E - 5 3/4 miles, 3/4 today

WEEK THREE: The goal for this week is 4 1/4-mile walks or runs
February 5, 2007 - The report from the teachers is that the students are doing great and are even asking about running over the weekends.  The mileage charts back this up - all of the students are ahead of the goal!  If they were sticking to the training program, everyone should have completed 2 1/4 miles by today.  Here is what they have done so far, including today:
    S - 4 1/4 miles, 1/2 today
A - 5 3/4 miles, 1 1/4 today (wanted to try for 2 miles but we ran out of time)
    A - 3 3/4 miles, 3/4 today
    C - 4 1/2 miles, 1/2 today
    H - 8 3/4 miles, 1/2 today
    P - 4 miles, missed today
    H - 3 miles,  1/2 today
    M - 3 1/2 miles, 1/2 today
    J - 2 3/4 miles, 1/2 today
    E - 3 miles, 1/4 today
The students were eager to get to the park but no one felt much like running, they all walked instead with a few short jogs interspersed.  No worries, everyone met or exceeded today's distance goal and all are ahead of target so I am thrilled!  I am also excited because one of the girls (who is mostly a walker) asked me if I would rather be an emporer or a runner.  We talked about both a little bit and then she told me she would rather be a runner.  Yay!  Another student is up to running 2 miles at a time.
When we got back to the school, we looked at this web page and talked again about the plans for the shoes, clothing, and races.  P's mom came in to drop him off so I got a chance to talk to her about the program and show her the mileage chart.  She thought it was a great idea and seemed happy that her son was able to participate.
I am going to a local store tomorrow to find out about shoes and clothes.  I would love to take the students shopping in the next few weeks.  I would also love to get Imago Dei Running Team shirts made for the races in May.  Thanks to all of you for making this possible!!!

WEEK TWO: The goal for this week is 4 1/4-mile walks or runs

January 29, 2007 - The students were ready to go when we arrived this morning and on the way to the park I heard all about extra laps completed last week.  Indeed, many of the students are ahead of the training goals.  We completed one lap running (mostly) and a second cool-down lap walking.  I noticed that the students who were unable to complete a full lap running were at least able to jog farther around the track than last week.  All easily completed the second lap at a walking pace.
When we returned to the school, I told the students about this website and the donations received so far.  They are very excited about the prospect of new running shoes and athletic clothing.  We also talked about the races in May, a 2 mile fun run the first weekend and a 5K at the end of the month. One student wanted to know about running as a relay team and we discussed the possibility of having some students run a relay in the 10K that accompanies the fun run.  The students were amazed that so many people were going to look at this website to see how they are doing.
We highlighted the first mile and a quarter on the Boston course map.  Ms White and I also made a chart with quarter mile and mile increments so that the students can mark off their individual progress daily.  I left the address for the website on the board and the students were going to check it out later today.
I think many of the students may surpass the 26 mile goal!

WEEK ONE: The goal for this week is 4 1/4-mile walks or runs

January 22, 2007 - The official first day of training for the students!  It had snowed the night before so only a handful of students came to school, but those that were there were ready to go.  There is a park near the school with a quarter mile dirt track.  Harris ran ahead with the big boys, Lily and I brought up the rear.  Everyone completed the lap, either running or walking.  One child went around a second time. My plan is to go run with the students at least once a week over the next 12 weeks to help keep them (and me) motivated.
