School on Wheels is on a mission to enhance and enrich educational opportunities for school-aged homeless children. Our ultimate vision is to break the cycle of homelessness through education. You can join us!
School on Wheels addresses the needs of homeless children who are struggling in the educational system and are at a higher risk of abandoning their education. Homeless students are four times more likely than their non-homeless peers to have learning disabilities, twice as likely to repeat a grade in school, and nearly twice as likely to become homeless adults. The only clear cut way to put an end to the repetitious pattern of homelessness is by giving homeless children an avenue out of the cycle. Our focus on education through tutoring is that avenue. Homeless children cannot become self-sufficient and break the cycle of poverty and homelessness without educational support.
By providing supplemental tutoring for students and educational advocacy with parents and teachers, School on Wheels is addressing the immediate academic needs of students who are impacted by homelessness. School on Wheels focuses on fostering individual self-sufficiency by creating an environment of learning, emphasis on academic achievement while working as a team with the child's parents and teachers, and matching volunteers to serve as tutors. School on Wheels volunteer tutors come from all different walks of life and are often the first examples of educational strength, success and self-reliance for these students.
