School on Wheels is on a mission to enhance and enrich educational opportunities for school-aged homeless children. Our ultimate vision is to break the cycle of homelessness through education. You can join us!
The School on Wheels story began in 2001 when Sally Bindley became aware of the need for Indianapolis homeless children to receive tutoring and mentoring.
Providing supplemental educational services for homeless children is a big job and until School on Wheels was formed, no one was doing it. That’s when we hit the streets- literally, and began tutoring homeless children. In our first year, two part-time staff members and four volunteers provided tutoring for 50 homeless children at one shelter. Word quickly spread and the good work of School on Wheels was being requested at other homeless shelters in Indianapolis. Fast-forward 10 years and School on Wheels has a staff comprised of 14 talented and dedicated employees and over 500 active volunteer tutors.
Volunteers Make a Difference!
Volunteering with School on Wheels provides you an opportunity to share your time and talent with a homeless child; encourage students that education is both important and possible; connect with other volunteers; and promote education as a tool to end homelessness across Indianapolis.
Volunteer opportunities are available for individuals, groups, and corporate partners.
