About Spina Bifida
Spina Bifida is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the U.S., and affects 3 out of every 10,000 newborns in Illinois. The condition is characterized by the failure of the spinal cord to close properly in the first month of pregnancy, resulting in varying degrees of paralysis, bowel and bladder difficulties, and learning disabilities.
New advances in surgery, along with the work of teams of doctors, therapists, teachers, and parents, are allowing those with Spina Bifida to live full and productive lives.
