Please Be My Valentine
Dear Family and Friends,
Happy Valentine’s Day! As most of you know our son Jacob was born with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). Looking back over the last year, it is obvious that we have been blessed. With all of the challenges that can affect our children with PWS, Jacob is doing great. He works very hard at his new school, the Rehabilitation Center for Children in Palm Beach. He is fortunate to get seven plus therapies a week in the classroom. Jacobs’s biggest noticeable delay is speech; he speaks very few words but understands almost everything. As we know the future for our son and others with PWS will continue to improve with new discoveries from research. As a family we know that this is an area we can contribute, so we take the time to reach out to you for help. This year, we hope you’ll be a special valentine for JACOB FISKE by joining PWSA (USA)’s Valentine Research Fund Campaign.
Love does so many things. It helps to lift us up when times are tough and helps us to celebrate when times are good. Prader-Willi syndrome brings many ups and downs. Individuals with PWS, which is a rare genetic condition affecting 1 in 12,000, have a dysfunction of the hypothalamus resulting in an inability to feel full after eating, among many other developmental and medical issues. Without love, treatment and supervision, the constant hunger can lead to extreme obesity and premature death.
From the bottom of our heart, we ask you to help us fund research for PWS. Thanks to generous donations last year, PWSA (USA) awarded more than twice the funds on research as in any prior year. Current projects include the study of a promising drug to battle the hunger and a study to define gastroenterological risk factors and prevention. Important on going projects include assessing what medications and dosages work best for behavior problems and sponsoring an international conference for scientists dealing with hyperphagia (excessive eating) research.
Last year the Valentine’s Day campaign raised $30,000. This year, we received a challenge from the Josilyn’s Faith Foundation. For every dollar raised over last year and up to $ 7,500.00, the Foundation will match it. That gives us a wonderful goal. If we reach $37,500, Josilyn’s Faith Foundation will fully match $7,500 putting our total goal to $45,000. This is an exciting matching grant challenge and with the love of our friends and family we know we can make it happen.
Love transforms lives. It’s the best way we know how to deal with PWS. Through your love and support, we know we’ll find a cure. We are sending our love to you this Valentines Day.
Sincerely,
The Fiske Family,
Garry, Maureen, Madison and Jacob "JJ"
