Each year since 1997 Police Officers from all around the United States have come together to participate in the Police Unity Tour to raise awareness and money for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. This coming year, I’m proud to say, it will be my inaugural year to participate in the 300+ mile bicycle ride from Northern New Jersey to the Memorial in WashingtonD.C. It truly is an honor to "Ride For Those Who Died."
This year I will be riding in memory of Officer Alex Del Rio, Hollywood Florida Police Department and all the other men and women who bravely made the ultimate sacrifice as they served the citizens of The City of Hollywood Florida and the United States.
Officer Alex Del Rio was killed in an automobile accident November 22, 2008 while attempting to stop a speeding motorist. The officer observed a motorist speeding eastbound on Sheridan Street. Officer Del Rio followed the car, and then had to take evasive action to avoid hitting a taxi cab. Officer Del Rio lost control of the cruiser and crashed into a tree in the median. His vehicle immediately was engulfed in flames and Officer Del Rio died from his injuries.
Alex became a Police Officer and held positions in Patrol, Special Operations Motors (the Police Motorcycle Unit) and Special Operations DUI/Traffic Homicide. Alex was highly trained in the areas of traffic enforcement, impaired driving, traffic homicide investigations and police motorcycle operations. Officer Del Rio was the recipient of several awards during his career. He was selected as the Hollywood Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” in October of 2003, he was a finalist for the 2003 “Officer of the Year” and he received over two-dozen Supervisor’s Commendations and letters of appreciation from our citizens, who repeatedly cited Alex for his professionalism, courtesy, politeness, efficiency and compassion. Officer Del Rio had served with the Hollywood Police Department for nine years.
We will be departing East Hanover on May 9th and arriving in WashingtonDC on May 12th. This will coincide with the candlelight vigil at the Memorial on May 13th to honor all Law Enforcement officers, many of whom are from The Great State of Florida, who were killed in the line of duty in 2008.
The Police Unity Tour motto is, “We ride for those who died;" so their memory and ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.
I am eternally grateful and humbled by the tremendous outpouring of support by my family, friends and most importantly the family of Officer Alex Del Rio for their unwavering support to the cause of Law Enforcement! This is for you Miriam & Family, you are in my heart, thoughts and prayers.
Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts. Please feel free to forward this link to anyone you feel might like to support me and the Police Unity Tour and take a minute to watch the video. Thank you for your support, may God Bless you always!
