- Extend efforts to provide prevention, recovery, and prosecution information to tens of millions of people, including your community, each year.
- Expand SOAR's programs to educate lawmakers, police officers, students and the media about sexual assault.
- Enhance SOAR's programs to empower victims of sexual violence.
- Enhance local services for survivors of sexual violence.
SOAR runs national awareness, education and prevention programs to empower survivors of sexual violence and enhance the public's understanding and acceptance of rape victims.

I have decided to make a difference this Spring 2008! I invite you to make a difference too!
I'll be participating in the state's boldest, highest-altitude, and most daring effort to spotlight awareness about Violence against Students. Our main event is a SkyDiving event called "Dru's Dive". It is part of a larger national event called Operation Freefall: The Two-Mile High Stand.
University students from across North Dakota are coming together during the spring of 2008 in a unified effort to raise awareness about violence against students. Dru Sjodin (UND) was raped and murdered in November 2003. Her killer, Alfonso Rodriquez is currently on death row. Mindy Morgenstern (VCSC) was killed in September 2006; her killer Moe Gibbs received life without parole. During the summer of 2007, yet another student, Anita Knutson (Minot State) was murdered in her apartment. This case remains unsolved.
The campaign "Kick Off" will be on April 26, 2008 at SkyDive Fargo from noon to 4 p.m. Special highlights of this kick off will be Linda Walker (Dru's Sjodin's mother) taking the first freefall as well as food and entertainment. The remaining jumps will be scheduled into June to allow all of those that want to participate to have the opportunity to experience this high altitude challenge.
The students are currently recruiting others to come on board with them to go skydiving. The jump costs $600; this includes the cost of the dive with a tandem master and funds built in for the scholarship donation. Any additional money raised through jump sponsors will go to the three anti-violence organizations, Operation FreeFall, SOAR and North Dakota Council on Abused Women's Services (NDCAWS).
The funds that are directed to NDCAWS will go towards the Women's Opportunity Scholarship Fund in the names of Dru Sjodin, Mindy Morgenstern and Anita Knutson. This fund's purpose is to provide higher education opportunities to low-income women who wish to enter, or are currently attending a North Dakota college, university, or trade school. The fund assists scholarship recipients in a number of ways. It helps them to break the bonds of poverty and enhance their lives and the lives of their families intellectually, culturally, and environmentally.
I know you are saying, "You're not a skydiver!" You're right, but I don't need to be. I'll be making a tandem skydive with a United States Parachute Association licensed tandem master!
By participating in Dru's Dive, I'll be raising funds for NDCAWS, Speaking Out About Rape (SOAR) and Operation FreeFall. The column to your left has more information about all of these wonderful organizations. In my opinion it is absolutely essential to keep these organizations well-funded so that they can continue and expand their life-changing services.
