My name is Johnny Wowk, also known as "Johnny the Walker."
This is my story.
I started walking in 1993. Both my kidneys failed in July of 2000, At that point I had walked over 5400 miles and still going. I had inherited my fathers kidney disease that took his life at age 58. While on dialysis I decided to walk the distance of around the world, 24902 miles, and dedicate the miles in memory of my father and at the same time spread the word of kidney disease awareness. I had to endure dialysis for the next five years as family members offer to donate a kidney were turned down for fear they may become inflicted also.
On December 24, 2005 I received a kidney. Dr Dickens Ko and the Transplant Team at Mass General Hospital did a great job. There are 26 million people in this country with chronic kidney disease and another twenty million are at risk. Over 300,000 people are on dialysis, my older brother Joe, a Vietnam Veteran, is one of them. My good friend Leo, a retired Marine Colonel and walking buddy inspired me to walk twenty miles a day. My best one day walk was 32 miles. My family and friends tell me I am a big inspiration to them and others and they admire what I'm doing. Please help me and all the other volunteers find a cure.
