I have found that most people are unaware of the history of the Law Enforcement (LE) Torch Run for Special Olympics, especially as it pertains to the State of Kansas. Let me share that history with you....I know you'll be proud!
The first ever Torch Run for Special Olympics occurred in Wichita, KS when Chief LaMunyon of the Wichita PD organized the run as a means to draw attention and raise funds for Special Olympics. Since the first Torch Run in 1981, it has spread to all 50 states and 35 nations around the world. It all started here in Kansas and this is why the Kansas Torch Run motto is "First to Carry the Torch!"
I am proud to be the Shawnee Police Department's coordinator for the Torch Run. When I first started coordinating the Torch Run in 2004, I found some guys would run, but the fundraising was lacking. Obviously, Special Olympics appreciates officers running on their behalf, but their main benefit comes from the funds raised so activities can be funded throughout the year. Fundraising became a priority and last year the Shawnee PD raised over $8,000 and this year's department goal is $10,000. My personal fundraising goal is $6,000.
I thoroughly enjoy being able to give back to the community I serve through this effort. I would greatly appreciate it if you would partner with me by donating to the Special Olympics.
If you would like to receive a "donor shirt" or ball cap for donating, please indicate this fact when submitting your donation, or contact me by phone at 913-238-2505. The Torch Run will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2008.
Thank you for visiting my Personal Fundraising Page. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution to my fundraising efforts.
