Mindy was my closest and best friend.  She was kind, thoughtful, energetic, funny, uplifting, and absolutely the most strikingly beautiful girl I have ever known.  Though Mindy was always prepared, she was stolen from the ones that love her far too soon.  She had a postive effect on alot of people while she was alive, and she still has that effect on those closest to her.  I love her and miss her more than any words can say. 

Because of what I have experienced by losing Mindy, and the pain of others I have seen abused by her murderer I have decided to participate in this fundraiser.  Below is a short description of what this is all about...

In the Spring of 2008 I will be participating in an effort to spotlight awareness of Violence against Students.  The main event is a skydive called "Dru's Dive".  It's part of a National event called Operation Freefall: The Two-Mile High Stand Against Sexual Assault.

University Students and supporters from across North Dakota and Minnesota are coming together during the spring in and effort to raise awareness about violence against three students.  Dru Sjodin (UND) was raped and murdered in November of 2003.  Her killer is currently on death row.  Mindy (VCSU) was murdered in her home in September of 2006.  Her killer was sentenced to life without parole. Just two weeks before his trial in Minot in June of 2007, Anita Knutson (Minot State) was murdered in her home.  No one has been arrested in her death.

So on April 26, 2008 at Noon, there will be a campaign kick-off in Fargo with food entertainment, and the first Skydives.  Dru's mother Linda will be jumping first to represent her daughter.  There will also be someone jumping in honor of Anita... and somewhere along the line I was elected to be the first to skydive for Mindy.

So I am now recruiting others to jump with me or to sponser me financially in the skydive.  Three hundred of the first $600 goes towards the jump itself and all the little extras that go with it.  The other half goes to Operation Freefall and the ND Council on Abused Women's Services.  The money going to the latter charity will be for scholarships in the names of Mindy, Anita, and Dru.  This is the part that I am most excited about.  The chance to help girls financially who may have been assaulted or harmed, who want to go to college is something I know Mindy would be so proud to have her name applied to.  Anything over $600 will all go directly to the scholarship.
