My mothers side of the family was diagnosed with Alpha Antitrypsin Deficiency in the fall of 2002. Alpha Antitrypsin Deficiency, also known as Alpha-1, is a genetic deficiency that affects the lungs and the liver. A protein called "AAT" is not made properly and the liver does not allow it to be distributed throughout the body. The tissues in the lungs are left unprotected because of the lack of "AAT" and the build up of "AAT" causes damage to the liver.

My grandfather passed away from the effects of Alpha-1 and my uncle ended up with significant liver damage as a side effect. My family has been affected by Alpha-1 and we are not the only ones. Alpha-1 affects 2 million people across the U.S. and 95% of these people have no idea.

I am working to raise awareness about Alpha-1 for that reason. "K.A.T.E. - Knowledge Awareness Together Embrace- I've Won with Alpha-1" is my platform for the Miss New Jersey Pageant.
