Hi!

My name is Katelynn. I have diabetes. I want to raise money for Southeastern Diabetes Education Services. Can you help raise money too? My goal is to raise $1,200!!!  That sounds like a bunch of money, but I know I can do it with help! SDES is a wonderful group that helps kids like me who have Diabetes. Every year they hold a camp for kids like me. We have awesome time meeting other children with diabetes and we get to learn to take care of ourselves without Mom and Dad.  We spend a whole week with our friends. SDES does other things too.   They help educate families on how to live a healthy life with diabetes.  It's a lot of work.

Last year, my best friend Anna Cuccuini and I didn’t know about firstgiving.com so we did a lemonade and brownie stand and raised about $45! It was fun! I think we are going to do it this year too! You can look down below and read a little story about me.

When I was 8 years old I got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. My Mom noticed I was having some symptoms of diabetes. I was using the bathroom a lot and drinking a lot of water. My third grade teacher, Mrs. Miranda Mitchell could even tell. I was also a little bit sleepy and usually I am never sleepy. So one afternoon we called Anna's Mom over (my best friend already had diabetes) and we checked my blood. My blood was like 597. It should be below 90. My mom didn’t know if that was good or not. Anna’s mom, Mrs. Kristy knew it wasn't, so we checked my blood again and I had gone up to 599. My dad also knew that I probably had diabetes. So, my mom didn’t take me to school, instead my dad took me to the ER. On the way there he told me about having diabetes. He told me that the glucose in my body couldn’t get in the cell without a medicine called insulin. Insulin is like the key that helps glucose get into my cell. We need glucose to have energy. The nurses at the hospital were SO nice, although they did come to check my blood a lot. It was fun because I could get up and walk around the hospital in my pajamas. One of the nurses came and got me and took me to the playroom to get some movies to watch and games to play. It was SO much fun. The only part I hated was the I.V. they had to put in me. They had to poke me a couple times because my blood wouldn’t come out. It hurt! I have to check my blood about 10 times a day or more. My fingers get so sore, but after you get used to it, it barely hurts. When I was in the hospital the nurses came in my room all the time to either check my blood or give me an insulin shot. My insulin shot was what made my blood sugar go down. My family and I were very scared, but since my best friend Anna had diabetes we knew that it would be all right. Anna and I have been friends since we were 6 years old. We met the first or second day of school. Anna goes to camp with me too. We can eat all foods, healthy foods are better though. We can't drink some drinks like hot chocolate and coke. We just have to have insulin every time we eat.

This Febuary I have had diabetes for 1 whole year. Please help me raise money for SDES. My Mom wants you to know this about SDES.

SDES is a non-profit, almost purely voluntary organization established and operated to help support the educational and family education needs for children affected with diabetes. SDES operated Camp Seale Harris and Camp Sugar Falls, diabetic camps for children and teens, as well as Family Weekend Seminars and support gatherings  All donations to SDES are tax decutable. Please visit their website to learn more at southeasterndiabetes.org .

By helping you will help me go to camp and others who might not be able to afford it. You will also help families cope with this disease and learn better ways of living with diabetes. Thank you for helping, and please send this to anyone who might want to help too!!!
