As the Executive Director of Support Connection, I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to share why this organization means so much to me.
Sunday, October 4, 2009 is a day I will hold close to my heart. Not only was it our 15th Annual Support-A-Walk but my daughter, Lauren's 27th birthday!! In her kindness, she chose to ask for donations to the Walk rather than look for gifts for herself.
On that morning, the fog lifted and the sun shone on the thousands of walkers who turned out for the Walk. No matter where I turned, I could feel the impact cancer has on so many lives and the importance of unitng to celebrate life, remember loved ones and emphasize that no one needs to be alone in a difficult time. I was also touched by the hundreds of volunteers, ranging from young children to 91 years old who came out to make the day happen. Due to their involvement, they know that the money raised is going to insure that Support Connection can continue to maintain and enhance its free and confidential breast and ovarian cancer support services.
When my girlfriend Isabel was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990, she had nowhere to turn in our community to talk to someone who could understand what she was going through. That all changed in 1996 when the doors of Support Connection opened. I am so proud that I worked with co-founders Nancy Heller and Rich Adamski to get Support Connection off the ground. Each and every day, I have the chance to honor Isabel's memory by our work.
Support Connection is unique. When you call Support Connection, you talk to a person who has dealt with cancer themselves. You can speak to a Peer Counselor, join a support group, attend a yoga class, get information and much more. Our services are available for you whether it is for minutes, hours, days or years. A person dealing with breast or ovarian cancer or a family member doesn't have to do it alone! Even though we have grown and have now offered support to thousands of people all over the country, our philosophy remains the same. While we all want a cure, there has to be somewhere for people who are living with cancer to turn to. Support Connection is that place.
To all of you who have supported me in my efforts and have made a donation, THANK YOU SO MUCH !! You are really helping make a difference.
If you haven't had a chance to donate yet, there still is plenty of time. Your donation, no matter the amount, means so much. Giving on this site is safe and secure or you can mail a donation to Support Connection, 360 Underhill Avenue, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598.
Every day I witness the power of caring. Often a smile or hug and a little time gives a person the hope and strength they need to deal with whatever challenge they face. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART FOR BEING THERE FOR ME AND ALL THE PEOPLE WE HELP!!
