Happy Hour Fund Raiser on Fri 11/20, 6-9pm @ McFadden's - 800 2nd Ave & 42nd St! www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=180027076555
[2009/10/29]: Today would have been Dolly's 64th Birthday. The NY Daily News included me in an article on Page 35 in today's paper: "Three New Yorkers running New York City Marathon for more than just bragging rights", www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/2009/10/29/2009-10-29_three_new_yorkers_running_new_york_city_marathon_for_more_than_just_bragging_rig.html?page=2
[2009/10/28]: My fundraiser has been finalized, 14 marathons in 13 consecutive weekends.
[2009/10/18]: PR at 3:59:43 in Asbury Park!
[2009/10/11]: I finished my first marathon double.
[2009/10/04]: I met a fellow PanCAN volunteer from Milwaukee who cheered for me at the Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee. I set a PR at 4:03:09.
[2009/09/28]: Hamptons was great, perfect weather, supported by PanCAN volunteers and runners too! I set a PR at 4:07:56. I felt so good that I ran the 18-mile NYC Marathon Tune-Up race in the rain the next day in Central Park.
[2009/09/25]: I have increased my fundraiser to 12 marathons this Fall.
[2009/09/21]: I finished marathon #2 pain-free in Yonkers. I was inspired after running with Maniac Dean Hutchinson who just ran a marathon the day before, so I registered to run the Steamtown Marathon the day after Baltimore. I started an album for these marathons: www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2108401&id=5412604
[2009/09/15]: I finished the first of my marathons on Sun 9/13 up in Montreal. It was my 10th overall marathon and my 1st international race, but was by far the hardest, a true test of my pain threshold. The course lacked Gatorade and both of my legs locked up. I managed to somehow make it into the 1976 Olympic Stadium and finish the race. One down, seven to go! Thomas (red Powered By Dim Sum tanktop) and I (purple PanCAN jersey) are visible in the official video from 3:33 to 3:37: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzhYIUcxU6c .
Patrick Swayze lost his battle against pancreatic cancer yesterday. I hope Congress heeds his call in his Op-Ed to the Washington Post, titled, "I'm Battling Cancer. How About Some Help, Congress?": www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/06/AR2009020602850_pf.html
[2009/08/19]: To follow my training progress, I have set up a Twitter account (@RunKino): www.twitter.com/RunKino . View my runs on Garmin: http://connect.garmin.com/explore?owner=hjkino .
[2009/08/12]: I have registered for 3 more marathons, so my goal is no longer 555 (5 marathons in 5 weekends in 5 states) and is now 8 marathons in 8 weekends.
[2009/08/10]: Dolly Hsieh lost her 7 month long battle against pancreatic cancer today at 2pm. Her husband (Deborah's father) was at her side. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for her.

Dear Friends, Colleagues, and PanCAN Supporters,
I am in the midst of running 14 Fall marathons in 13 consecutive weekends, including cancer memorial walks and an ultramarathon. In doing so, I am attempting to raise awareness and charity funding for the non-profit organization, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN).
I was inspired to run marathons in different states in a short timespan after reading Dean Karnazes' book, "50/50: Secrets I Learned Running 50 Marathons in 50 Days" (in 50 States). Dean ran to support his charity, Karno's Kids, to motivate kids to stay fit and thrwart childhood obesity. My endeavor to run 14 in 13 weeks in 10 states (plus DC & Canada), is my attempt to raise awareness and support for a charitable organization with the goal of benefitting pancreatic cancer research.
Pancreatic cancer has taken the life of my dear uncle, Yoichi Kinoshita, back in 2003, who played a father figure role in my life.
The disease has regrettably struck again this year as my girlfriend's (Deborah's) beloved mother (Dolly Hsieh) was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in January. After a 7 month battle, pancreatic cancer took the life of Dolly Hsieh on 8/10/2009.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the very few cancers for which survival has not improved substantially in the last 30 years. Median survival from diagnosis is around 3 to 6 months. The 5-year survival rate was 2% in the 1970s and is just 5% now. The overall 5-year survival rate for all forms of cancer is 66%. Although pancreatic cancer accounts for only 2.5% of new cancer cases, it is responsible for 6% of cancer deaths each year. Unlike many cancers, no early detection tools or effective treatments exist for pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer research is heavily underfunded (less than 1% of the NIH budget), so any donation amount would be much appreciated! [Sources: Wikipedia and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.]
Please support me in my quest to raise awareness and funding for PanCAN (www.pancan.org), a non-profit organization aimed at advancing research, supporting patients, and creating hope for those affected by pancreatic cancer. Your donation will help fund scientific research with the end goal of developing a cure for this disease. Donating through this site is secure. Your contributions are tax deductible. If your company matches your donation, please let me know so I can update the "Amount raised offline" appropriately.
Even if you cannot afford to give, I urge you to read up more on this disease as early detection is critical for survival for those with the disease.

Note:
All of your donation contributions will be applied towards PanCAN. Hideki Kinoshita will be funding his own lodging, transportation, registration, etc. for his races.
All donations made to this site will benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, the only national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure. The organization raises money for direct private funding of research—and advocates for more aggressive federal research funding of scientific breakthroughs in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer. For more information on the work of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or if you know someone who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, please go to www.pancan.org .
