Hello, I'm Laleh!
I live in Oakland, and I'm a full-time student at Laney College. I'm an environmental biology major, and I have worked at Lawrence Berkeley Lab doing research in the Microbial Ecology lab for the past three summers (including this one). In my free time, I read whatever book is within arms' reach, and I also sing, record and play shows with a band called "Down Down Down." In the future I'd like to travel the world, and possibly attend medical school or grad school.
Since moving to the Bay Area, I've decided to get involved with the community in different ways, and I've found my involvement with Habitat For Humanity to be hugely rewarding. And super fun! I was completely and utterly exhausted after working for two days in the hot sun for the Build-A-Thon in April 2009, but it was worth it. The houses look magnificent, and I can't wait to swing the ol' hammer again.
Last year I raised $2,383.00, and I'm pretty certain I can double that this year.
I also hope that my efforts serve to inspire other people to serve their community.
The Bay Area is in the midst of an astounding housing crisis. As a result of this crisis, many low-income Bay Area families are living in substandard or poverty housing conditions. Habitat for Humanity East Bay approaches the challenge of providing affordable housing in an innovative way. We (the volunteers) will build the homes in Oakland, and these are made available for low-income families.
Your pledge to me will help pay for the materials needed to build the houses, and will ensure that I have a chance to participate. I am excited to be a part of the Habitat for Humanity's volunteer program . . . and to take a break from studying to go out there and get my hands dirty!
Any donation, big or small will help! THANKS for your support!!
love,
