Down Syndrome
Down syndrome is the most common chromosome disorder, occurring once in every 733 live births. Individuals with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes instead of 46, with the extra being the 21st chromosome. This extra genetic material causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome. There are more than 350,000 people with Down syndrome living in the United States. It affects people of all ages, races, and economic levels.
Individuals with Down syndrome experience cognitive delays, but the effect is usually mild to moderate and is not indicative of the many strengths and talents that each individual possesses. Quality educational programs, a stimulating home environment, good health care, and positive support from family and friends, enable people with Down syndrome to lead fulfilling lives and be contributing members of society.
