My personal message:

Friends & Family -

Two years ago I was training (or not) for the Austin 1/2 Marathon.  I was trying to weasel out of running up until the day before the run.  I felt unprepared and I did not want to crawl across the finish line.  My good friend Monica Alas, kept urging me and even went to pick up my runners packet.  The night before the run I was sifting through the goodies in my my packet and I happened upon a brochure for Cure Duchenne and a light blue bracelet.  The brochure urged us to run for boys who couldn't walk.  I was overcome with emotion because while I was trying to decide whether or not to run, I was reminded of Tyler - my stepson - who simply did not have that option.  Tyler has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and has been ambulatory for nearly half of his life.

Many of you have met Tyler and have been charmed by his wit and sense of humor.  Because of his disease he sees life differently than most and it makes him a joy to be around him.  Over two years ago, Tyler moved in with Gary and I in San Antonio and our lives have not been the same since - quite frankly we don't know what we did without him.  While we have been blessed that the disease has not taken him from us in his early teens, many young boys are not so lucky.   Cure Duchenne is working to accelerate aggressive clinical trials and bringing life saving drugs to young boys afflicted with this awful disease.

Our support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association has not wavered as they have been a great support to us as we deal with Tyler's needs, but Cure Duchenne is far more aggressive about testing non-traditional medical trials.  I have had a chance to talk with Debra Miller, she and her husband Paul founded Cure Duchenne and their passion to find a cure is immeasurable.  In 2002, when their son was diagnosed, Debra quit her job to take care of him and she set out to use her business background to create awareness for Duchenne and to help raise money to bring previously animal tested drugs to clinical trials. For more about Cure Duchenne, click on the link on the left side of this page and feel free to browse cureduchenne.org

So about that run a few years ago...I finished but my motivation to keep going was the blue plastic bracelet on my wrist.  Every time, I wanted to stop, I was reminded that Tyler couldn't walk.  I have worn my blue bracelet ever since and I love it when people ask me what the bracelet stands for.

Gary and I are running in the San Antonio Rock n' Roll marathon and we are running for Tyler.  We are using the run to raise money for Cure Duchenne.  We need your help.  We have set a big goal and I am an over achiever so I will want to blow the doors off of the goal.  I know I can do it if you help. Please make a donation by using the link provided on this page.  Gary, Tyler and I would greatly appreciate your support.
