When I Found About Cancer...
When I was 6 years old I lost my best friend, Tommy, to Leukemia.  He had gone through years of treatment and when it was bad, he was bald and weak and unable to play.  To this day I can remember the pain I felt when my parents told me he died.  I never forgot about Tommy and made a promise to myself that I would continue fighting this disease just as he had so bravely for years as a little boy.  I remember running around his backyard and looking back I now realize how strong he was.  Back in the 70's leukemia treatment was a far cry from what it is today (thanks to donations from people like you) and Tommy outlived his doctor's estimations.  He was a fighter; a kid with more will than most adults have today.

Alex's Lemonade Stand...
In 2000, a 4 year old cancer patient named Alexandra "Alex" Scott announced a seemingly simple idea -she was holding a lemonade stand to raise money to help "her doctors" find a cure for kids with cancer. The idea was put into action by Alex and her older brother, Patrick, when they set up the first "Alex's Lemonade Stand for Childhood Cancer" on their front lawn in July of 2000.

For the next 4 years, despite her deteriorating health, Alex held an annual lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. Following her inspirational example, thousands of lemonade stands and other fundraising events have been held across the country by children, schools, businesses, and organizations, all to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer. On August 1st, 2004, Alex died peacefully at the age of 8 -- she had raised over $1 million for childhood cancer research in her short lifetime.

Alex's spirited determination to raise awareness and money for all childhood cancer while she bravely fought her own deadly battle with cancer has inspired thousands to raise money and give to her cause. Alex's family and supporters are committed to continuing her inspiring legacy through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Alex's Lemonade Strikes a Chord...
When I first heard about Alex and her story I was deeply moved.  The more I read about it the more I felt a connection to her cause.  I have been wanting to run another marathon since I last ran the Boston Marathon.  It's one thing to train for a marathon while single and 29 with the goal of breaking 3 hours and another when married and 35 with 2 kids and 2 businesses.  I needed inspiration; something that would make getting up at 5am every morning (including weekends) to run between 5 and 20 miles before my family ate breakfast, worth it.  Sometimes you need something bigger than yourself to achieve a goal.  I will run the Philadelphia Marathon with Tommy's endurance as my guide and raise money for childhood cancer with the entrepreneurial blueprint that Alex created.

Running With a Purpose...
We have all lost family or friends to cancer.  On November 18th I will run the Philadelphia Marathon in a navy blue shirt with the yellow Alex's Lemonade Stand logo on it to help raise awareness for cancer research.  By running under 3 hours I will be in the top 3% of marathon finishers.  I hope that this will help bring even more attention to Alex and her story.  I will also be carrying Tommy's name with me on race day.  I am thinking of writing his name on my sneakers.  If you would like to give me the name of someone you lost I would be honored to carry their name with me for 26.2 determined miles throughout Philadelphia.
