Hi, I’m Dorothy. I originally arrived at the LHS with a litter of my brothers and sisters. Being adorable pug puppies, we were all adopted almost immediately after being placed up for adoption. Follow-up phone calls to my adopted family were filled with stories of how much I was loved and how well I was doing in my new home. But two months after being adopted, my health began to change and my parents made an urgent phone call to LHS. I was not doing well and could not move my legs. My adopted family did not have the financial resources to run the necessary tests, let alone pay for any treatment I may have needed. So I was returned to LHS where I was quickly evaluated by the LHS on-staff veterinarian. All signs pointed to bacterial meningitis, a very serious illness which was causing paralysis, among other things. While things didn’t look good, the staff looked into my big brown eyes, saw my feisty spirit, and knew they had to try and save me…and so they did.
It is now three months later, and I am showing great progress. I have regained use of my front legs and can now move myself about. My prognosis is still guarded, but my quality of life is terrific.
The Veloudis family met me and were so touched by my story they just had to get to know me. Over the last few weeks they have spent time getting to know me, and although they realize there is no guarantee on my life expectancy, they have agreed to take me into their home to love and care for me for as long as I need them.
Your donation, large or small, will help support vital programs such as our Second Chances and foster care programs, which allow the LHS to provide extensive care for the animals who need them most—animals like Dorothy.
