Dear Literacy Mid-South supporter,
The future of our city is highly dependent upon creating a community which values education, reading, and learning. We are in the unique position to change Memphis. Our city should be a city that is full of opportunities for every person to learn and share. I need your help to make this happen. Literacy Mid-South is doing this in a number of ways:
- The Adult Learning Program at Literacy Mid-South provides basic education for low-literate adults. We offer the adult learning program from our midtown location and other sites in the city. More than 250 trained volunteers provide private and group tutoring for more than 550 adults who want to learn.
- The Academy Tutoring Project recruits and trains community volunteers to provide tutoring support to students at five innovative charter schools in Memphis.
- -The Family Literacy Program increases parental involvement in the early learning experiences of pre-school age children. The program teaches parents how to build a strong and supportive literacy environment at home and emphasizes the importance of reading aloud to children.
- The Smart Memphis Coalition is a collaborative of non-profit organizations, businesses, educational institutions and government agencies united to promote reading and lifelong learning in the Mid-South. Membership is free and open to everyone who desires to build a great community of literate citizens.
This winter, we're asking you to pledge your support for Tutor-A-Thon, our online event which kicks off on February 1, 2012. Our volunteer tutors in our Adult Learning Program and our Academy Tutoring Project will work together to raise much-needed funds for our programs, which serve more than 2500 Memphians each year. You can help by either creating a page yourself to raise money or by pledging your support for an existing volunteer. It's easy, it's fun, and it's for a great cause!
