Tutor-A-Thon
Did you know it costs $500 per year per student to teach our adult learners how to read and write? It costs almost twice as much to serve a child who is behind in grade level at one of our four charter schools. Each year, Literacy Mid-South serves more than 550 adults and 200 children who desperately want to move forward in their lives. More than 200 volunteers serve every week at Literacy Mid-South to help our students overcome illiteracy.
In the United States alone, the most recent statistics show that 34 million adults are below what are considered levels of basic literacy. That means that these people cannot fill out a job application or read the label on a prescription. In Memphis, more than 120,000 people are considered functionally illiterate. That’s 1 in 7 Memphians. YOU CAN HELP!
Beginning February 1st, we need your help to sponsor an adult student in our Adult Learning Program or a child from our our Academy Tutoring Program. For two months, our volunteer teachers and tutors will be accepting your donations to sponsor them and their students. Your contribution could help someone get their driver's license, earn their citizenship, get their GED, or learn how to read to their children.
How your contribution helps:
$25 - Provides one reading or math curriculum for a student
$50 - Provides classroom supplies for one semester to one classroom
$100 - Provides a classroom with supplies for one year
$250 - Provides Computer Lab instruction to 25 students for one semester.
$500 - Supports an adult student for one year at Literacy Mid-South with books, supplies, classes, computers, and more.
