On May 18th, Maine will have its first walk for epilepsy. My interest in starting the first walk for epilepsy in Maine is very close to my heart. My six-month old daughter has been diagnosed with epilepsy. Delia has suffered over 60 seizures and has had four hospitalizations. My husband and I jump at every sound she makes and observe her movements. We live with the fear of not knowing when the next seizure will happen. We will never be the same since we have witnessed our daughter fight for her life. Throughout these six months, we have met other families dealing with the same issues we face everyday. It was at that moment when we decided to take action. We will be walking towards a cure and helping support programs for families dealing with this neurological condition. It is time that Maine raises awareness about the importance of epilepsy education and support. On May 18th, it will be a day where families can stand up and take action against the condition that has taken over so many lives. All proceeds raised by this event will be used to fund programs to improve the quality of life for the more than 24,000 people living with epilepsy in Maine.
