My personal message:

Thanks to each of you for visiting my page. I am working to raise funds for my upcoming volunteer project in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

For those of you who may not know me personally, I am 26 years old and recently graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology. I have plans to pursue a graduate degree in International Relations, beginning next year. Over the last few years, I have developed a great passion for Africa, its myriad cultures and people. Eventually, I would like to work in the region, lending humanitarian aid to refugees and internally-displaced persons.

I hope this volunteer opportunity will be the first of many, and believe it will be a wonderful introduction to the continent. I intend to learn more about some of the crises facing the region and how various humanitarian initiatives are carried out on the ground, while doing what little I can to improve the lives of the most vulnerable Tanzanians.

Now, a little bit about my trip: I will be spending two months (Aug.-Oct.) in Tanzania caring for and teaching children at a local orphanage. There is a great need for assistance in this area. At present, nearly one million children have been orphaned by AIDS. Many others have been orphaned on account of tropical diseases, such as malaria.

All funds received will be used for the sole purposes of this project. The vast majority of my expenses will include paying for the volunteer quest itself (housing with a local family, meals, travel insurance, Swahili lessons, cultural excursions, and other in-country support).

This is something that I have been looking forward to for a very long time, and I sincerely thank each and every one of you who may have a hand in making my dream of working in Africa come true.
