Denny's Challenge 5k, a Miles for Melanoma Run/Walk
More information for the event can be found at www.dennyschallenge5k.com. Denny’s Challenge is pleased to have had Run The East provide the chip-timing services for the race.
The annual event started in July, 2010, and draws a diverse range of participants to the cross-country course at the Wake Med Soccer Park – from the experienced running enthusiast to the recreational beginner, and to family members of all ages. As part of the Melanoma Research Foundation’s Miles for Melanoma program, it has already raised over $15,000 in its first three years on behalf of melanoma research.
This event is annually a USATF sanctioned race; race packets are provided with early pick-up available. On-site registration begins on race day at 7AM at the Wake Med Soccer Park.
Ample parking is available at the race site, and planned attendance of returning sponsors is expected. In addition to the 5K Run/Walk, there is also a 100-yard fun run for kids.
This race which began in July of 2010, was started to honor the last wishes of Denny Neely before he succumbed to melanoma. A man of wit & humor in his last hours he challenged his family to a 50 mile race. This time he wasn’t joking – he was serious. To accept his challenge and to help further melanoma research, Denny’s Challenge continues to grow as it offers 16 medals to the top 16 finishers each year. The 16 medals represent the 50-mile total Denny noted. Age group awards have also been awarded.
The founders of the race continue to be amazed how a dying wish has now evolved into a fun recreational event in the Triangle area of North Carolina, and to see its popularity grow. Thanks for joining us in furthering melanoma research, honoring those who have gone before us, and enjoying a fun event with a diverse range of participants. It's always fun.
