July 2009
Dear Family and Friends,
Helen Keller once wrote, “Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it.” On May 2, 2009, Melanie “Mel” Bautista, a friend, sister, daughter, niece, mentor, teacher, and beautiful young lady, passed away.
I am writing to you today to ask that you not only keep those overcoming the grief of Mel’s death in your thoughts and prayers, but to also ask you to be a part of helping prevent others from experiencing this tragedy. Some of her friends are raising money, training and running in the Indianapolis Marathon to take place on October 17, 2009 in memory of Mel. We will be raising money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Their mission is to understand and prevent suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reach out to people with mental disorders and those affected by suicide.
Mel spent the last school year teaching underprivileged middle school boys math and science in New Bedford, MA. Her passion in life was to help others. Anyone that met her would attest that Mel’s giving nature and ability to brighten one’s day was truly unique to her character. If Mel were here today she would be the friend making training calendars and encouraging us to get out there and run. She would be the one reaching out to others and giving.
In Mel’s honor, we are upholding her legacy to make a difference in the lives of others. Please consider being a part of this cause by making a monetary donation. All proceeds will be donated to AFSP in hopes of preventing someone else from ending his or her life and leaving loved ones behind to grieve.
Thank you for your generosity and continued support during this extremely difficult time. It is through family and friends that we will “overcome suffering,” as Helen Keller wrote.
Love,
Mel's Belles
