Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease, because of which, the body’s own defense mechanisms attack various parts of the body, most commonly the skin, joints, heart, lungs, blood, kidneys, and brain, causing pain, irritation, and damage. The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that there are between 1.5 and 2 million Americans with Lupus, with more than 16,000 new cases developed each year. More than 90% of the people that have Lupus are women. Unfortunately, it has been over 50 years since there has been any new treatment for Lupus. To raise money for Lupus research, I am participating in the Race Across Oregon (RAO). The RAO is a 538-mile ultra-distance bicycle ride around the state. The race is limited to 49 hours, and contains over 40,000 ft of climbing. In 2008, only 10 people were able to finish the traditional solo event.
