***Sept. 3rd UPDATE***

My name is Zip and I am one special cattle dog.   I don’t like to brag but there are so many great things about me!  One really unique thing about me is that I am learning sign language.  You see, I am deaf and so I have to learn things in a different way.  I know sit, stay, down, and wait.  I am working on other signs like “leave it”, “off”,  and “okay”.  They say that learning takes time, but I am really smart and catch on to things quickly.  I am fully house trained, dog door trained, and crate trained.  I am a good watchdog too! I always check the window to see who is near my front yard.  I will bark to let my foster parents know that someone is coming to the house.  I love go on walks and never pull.  I also love to go out in public and meet everyone.

I spend my days playing with my foster brother and sister.  Sometimes, I want to play with the cats but my foster parents remind me not to be too rough with them.  My foster parents even have chickens but I never try to chase them.  When I am not playing, I am sleeping!  I love to cuddle with my foster dad.

I must warn you that I do have a bad foot. When I was a puppy, I was dragged from a car and it didn’t heal right. This means that I am in a lot of pain.  My foster parents tell me that in a few weeks, I am going to get a surgery that will make me all better.  They told me that even though I might look a bit different (I will only have three legs) I will still be the best darn cattle dog around.

Update on Zip’s foot:  NHCD received another specialist’s opinion on Zip’s foot and this veterinarian felt that Zip would be better off if they amputated his leg.  Zip is expected to undergo surgery on September 29, 2008.  He will have the surgery and spend approximately two days at the veterinary hospital.  The surgery is expected to cost $2200.00 and Zip is expected to make a full recovery in 2-3 weeks.  For Zip, this will mean that he will be pain-free.  Zip will still need to take chondroitan sulfate for joint health but he will not need pain medication anymore.

See Zip's video...click on the link under his picture.

Here is Zip's story.  Zip came to us in Nov.  of 06 after he was turned into a local emergency hospital.  He has a lame foot that limits his movement from a previous injury that was not ever treated.  Apparently, he had been thrown from a moving car when he was 3-4 months old and his rescuers never did anything to fix his foot, but instead turned around and turned him in 3 months later.    We have had him checked out at several vets and it has been determined that he should have a $2200 surgery to attempt to fix his foot.  Basically the vet thinks that the lameness appears to be coming from soft tissue damage where the ligaments/tendons were torn at the metacarpus joint and has frozen that joint into permanent hyperextension. With therapy following treatment his medical need will result in a vet bill of $3000.  Please help us do the right thing for him by donating now!  This means he can’t bend his foot and walk normally on it.  He can still run but wears out pretty fast when he plays.

Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
