Founded in 1970, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Network is one of the largest rehabilitation facilities in the United States providing comprehensive rehabilitation. With a 296-bed hospital in Boston and 8 outpatient centers throughout Massachusetts, Spaulding is the largest provider of rehabilitation medicine in New England providing care to patients following strokes, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, sports injuries, among many other conditions. Since 1995, Spaulding has been named to the U.S. News and World Report as one of America's top rehabilitation hospitals in the nation. Spaulding is home to the Harvard Medical School Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and its PM&R residency program.
One program that makes Spaulding unique among rehabilitation hospitals is the Dr. Charles H. Weingarten Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program that has been offering activities to people with disabilities or limitations to move beyond the hospital. Activities offered include windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, and wall climbing. With the Weingarten Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program, Spaulding is able to offer flexible and challenging rehabilitation at the same time creating fun and a greater sense of independence for the patients.
