Paddle for Life - Supporting the Fight Against Cancer
(while building team spirit at a fun charitable event!)

Paddle for Life is a community dragon boat festival organized by San Francisco Bay Area teams to raise money for charity, raise awareness of the dragon boat sport, and create a fun time for spectators and paddlers alike.

This year the race will be held at Jack London Square in Oakland, California on June 7 - 8, 2008.

Your contribution will support the following two cancer charities:

American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society has been supporting cancer research for over 50 years, and fights cancer through a three-fold plan of research, education and advocacy across the nation.

Asian American Cancer Support Network 
Provides an educational, supportive, and diverse network of resources for Asian Americans affected by cancer. It also strives to provide a community resource network for Asian Americans affected by cancer in the Bay Area.

Dragon Boating is a team paddling sport involving 20 paddlers (10 along each side), a steersperson and a drummer, racing in a long boat against several others. Dragon boating emphasizes working together with teammates to persevere and synchronize every paddle stroke to fight for the finish line. The sport originated in China, and dates back over 2,000 years. In recent years it has become one of the fastest growing international sports, as exhibited by an increasing number of race festivals being held in the US, Canada, Australia, Africa, Europe and throughout Asia. Paddlers of any skill level can enjoy the sport and develop their technique in order to eventually compete on a local, national or even international level.
