We just got back from our honeymoon - one year after getting married. While we hoped to get away after our wedding, we stayed in California to campaign against Proposition 8 and unfortunately this initiative passed by a slim majority. Now because of Proposition 8, our California Constitution includes an exception to our "equal protection clause" that denies same-sex couples, like us, the freedom to marry. So we have to go back to the ballot box and do the work that needs to be done to encourage California voters to return the California Constitution to its original form prior to Proposition 8's passage.
On Sunday, October 11th, we will be marching across the Golden Gate Bridge in support of Marriage Equality USA (a national non-profit organization working in support of the freedom to marry). We'd like you to sponsor our walk or even better, join us at Crissy Field at 9:30am and march with us.
We know there are many organizations working to support the freedom to marry, but we believe Marriage Equality USA is the most effective at creating change - so much so that we volunteer our personal time to support this organization. Marriage Equality USA empowers local community members to go out and share their personal stories on why marriage matters to their family members, neighbors, co-workers and community. With over 35 county chapters and more on the way in California, we are building a structure that will be the key in any future campaign. Furthermore since we work in coalition with other organizations, we make sure not to duplicate efforts. Lastly, we are deploying this model across the nation and our volunteers are supporting efforts in states, like Maine which is facing its own "Proposition 8" initiative in November.
Thanks for all your support and take care.
Love, Pam and Shauna
