Building upon the legacy of Arthur Griffin, the mission of the Griffin Museum of Photography is to promote an appreciation of photographic art and a broader understanding of its visual, emotional, and social impact.
At the Griffin Museum, you will find exhibitions from well-known photographers to those emerging on the scene that explore important themes and thought-provoking ideas. All of our exhibitions and programs are designed to encourage the passionate exploration of the art of photography. Our audience covers a broad base from young students to senior citizens.
You are a vital ingredient for our continued growth. Our audience is key to helping the Griffin take shape as a vibrant cultural institution in Winchester and well beyond. Since our inception in 1993, we have hosted over 150 exhibitions. We need your support now more than ever to continue to bring quality exhibitions and programs to life for our public. We are a valuable resource in the community. We have worked hard at creating a welcoming and open environment for our guests and to make our viewers’ visits meaningful. We have also worked hard at giving value to our members. Many of our programs this year have been free for members or members-only events. We have kept our membership and juried show submission fees, as well as our program fees, reasonable and affordable. This past year we brought major photography exhibitions to New England. We offered six exhibitions in our Main Gallery, six exhibitions in our Atelier Gallery and three exhibitions in our Griffin Gallery in addition to our web exhibitions. We opened a satellite gallery at the Stoneham Theatre. Our visitors were moved by Stephen Wilkes’ "Ellis Island, Ghosts of Freedom", delighted by William Wegman’s "It’s a Dog’s Life" and inspired by Anna Tomczak’s "Sanctuary". Our current exhibition "Humankind" utilizes photography as a vehicle to dynamically explain mankind to man. In late January 2009 Emmet Gowin and Elijah Gowin come to the Griffin to exhibit for the first time together in "Pull of Gravity". Also in January we will open another satellite gallery at the Aberjona River Gallery in Winchester. Today education plays an important role in museums nationwide. We aim to produce relevant educational programs for all ages to augment our photography exhibits. We offered forty programs in FY08 that were geared to audiences from nursery school students to senior citizens. Our educational programming, coupled with our outstanding exhibitions, bring meaning and relevance to our audience. Help us continue our educational outreach in FY09. • $50 keeps our on-line galleries hosted for one month.
• $100 underwrites an honorarium for one Senior Sunday artist presenter.
• $250 pays for part of the cost of one exhibition’s signage.
• $500 allows us to engage an acclaimed juror for our juried show.
• $1,000 pays for much of one leg of an exhibition’s journey to Winchester.
Your support truly matters as we continue to build upon Arthur Griffin’s legacy. Every dollar you give to the Griffin Museum counts! Small amounts from our committed constituency will move us forward in our mission to serve you. Just think, if 1082 people each gave $5 we would easily make our on-line target goal of $5000. Through your support, the Griffin will continue as a valuable resource and make a difference in the cultural life of our community through the universal language of photography. Many thanks in advance for your support.
Most gratefully yours,
