Lupus is an often misunderstood disease that can be debilitating and life-threatening. A recent national survey commissioned by the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) revealed that Americans, especially younger women who are at greatest risk for developing lupus, are not very familiar with the disease. And, although lupus primarily affects women between the ages of 15 and 44, men and children also can develop the disease. A lack of public awareness and recognition of lupus symptoms contribute to the large number of people with the disease who receive late diagnosis.
