The Lupus Foundation of America is the nation's leading non-profit organization dedicated to finding the causes and cures for lupus. Lupus is a serious chronic autoimmune disease that can attack organs including the heart, lungs, blood, skin, brain and kidneys. It is estimated that approximately 1.5 million people are affected by lupus in the United States alone. While eight of ten new cases of lupus develop among women of childbearing age, women of all ages, as well as men and children, also develop lupus. Women of color are disproportionately affected by lupus and are also far more likely to have severe organ involvement and complications. Unfortunately, there is no known cure. And, quite often, current treatment options for lupus patients can be toxic. Furthermore, the FDA has not approved a lupus specific drug in over 40 years! The Lupus Foundation of America, Wisconsin Chapter's mission is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of lupus, support individuals and families affected by the disease, increase awareness of lupus among health professionals and the public, and find the causes and cure.
