ABOUT THE RONALD McDONALD HOUSE
While dealing with the uncertainty of illness or injury, parents are often reluctant to leave their child’s side while they are hospitalized. In order to provide families with the ability to remain with their child, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) was established. Launched in 1974, RMHC programs are now in 52 countries around the world. Core programs include Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family Room. Both programs provide a place of respite for families where they can have the comforts of home, yet still have the ability to be at their child’s side at a moment’s notice.
Opened in 2005, our Ronald McDonald Family Room staff and volunteers provided a supportive and loving environment for our families while they were our guests. Families also found comfort from other guests who were enduring similar circumstances.
From 2005-2008, The Ronald McDonald Family Room at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY offered a warm welcome to over 500 families in the Hudson Valley and Tri-State area. Every night, families found sanctuary with us, knowing that their children were nearby. While the actual cost per night is much higher, families were asked to donate only $15 per night and no one was ever turned away due to inability to pay.
Plans are currently underway to build a 12-bedroom Ronald McDonald House on the grounds of the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital. Our new house will enable us to serve triple the amount of families we have in the past with an increased capacity to provide more programs to our families during their stay with us.
