One out of every 150 children born today will be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Our baby, niece, cousin, and friend, Ella, is one of them.
When Ella was diagnosed, Brian and I really knew nothing about Autism, which is particularly sad on my part as I am a former educator. We have learned so much and that is why we want to run the Nashville Country Music Marathon to help raise Autism Awareness and funds for the Autism Society of America.
The children and adults with ASD are people just like us who have difficulty processing their environment. Autism is a neurobiologial disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. Autism typically goes hand in hand with Sensory Processing Disorder as well where the way you process your five senses is distorted.
Autism is on the rise by 10-17% per year, which means that the prevalence of Autism could reach 4 million Americans in the next decade. This year more children will be diagnosed with autism than AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined, yet profound gaps remain in our understanding of both the causes and cures of the disorder. Also, Autism knows no racial, ethnic, social boundaries, family income, lifestyle, or educational levels and can affect any family, and any child.
The cost of treatment for a child with Autism ranges from 15-30K per year out of pocket expenses.
It has become our mission to bring out the best of Ella and challenge her to become the best she can be despite the challenges that Autism may present.
Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
