The Lupus Foundation of America is the nation's leading non-profit organization dedicated to finding the causes and cures for lupus. Lupus is a serious chronic autoimmune disease that can attack organs including the heart, lungs, blood, skin, brain and kidneys. It is estimated that approximately 1.5 million people are affected by lupus in the United States alone. While eight of ten new cases of lupus develop among women of childbearing age, women of all ages, as well as men and children, also develop lupus. Women of color are disproportionately affected by lupus and are also far more likely to have severe organ involvement and complications. Unfortunately, there is no known cure. And, quite often, current treatment options for lupus patients can be toxic. Furthermore, the FDA has not approved a lupus specific drug in over 40 years! The Lupus Foundation of America, Wisconsin Chapter's mission is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of lupus, support individuals and families affected by the disease, increase awareness of lupus among health professionals and the public, and find the causes and cure.

Our personal message:
Once again it's time for the annual Strides for Lupus!
I was diagnosed with lupus in 1994 at the age of 14. I turned 28 in December, which means I have spent half of my life with this debilitating disease. Having stage 4 kidney disease in 1999 was the most difficult time, until this last year (actually last 3 months), which has been one of the most exciting as well as trying times in my entire life.
Shortly after the lupus walk last year, my husband, Jeff, and I found out that we were going to be having a baby! (YES - it can be done with lupus!!!!!!!!)
Because I have lupus, I needed to see lots of specialists and give myself shots of blood thinners twice a day because I test positive for the anticardiolipin antibody which causes me to be at a higher risk for blood clots. The pregnancy went remarkably well and we had a healthy baby girl, Anasyn Lois, on February 18th of this year!
We were amazed and thankful that everything had gone so well during the pregnancy and during the delivery!
However, almost two weeks after giving birth, I developed pain in my lower back and ended up in the ER with no function or feeling of my left leg.
MRI showed blood had pooled around my spinal cord where the epidural had been. I lost bladder control and needed to undergo emergency spinal surgery to remove what was now a blood clot pinching my spinal cord. (now I have a beautiful 5-inch scar on my back).
I was lucky enough to have family (particularly my mother) willing to take care of Anasyn during this time.
I was in the hospital for a total of 6 days.
My mother stayed with Jeff and I for more than 6 weeks since I still had no feeling of my left leg and couldn't walk without a walker. I had physical therapy a couple of times a week to work on strengthening my leg and to learn how to manage.
About 6 weeks after the surgery, I ended up in the ER again, this time with severe chest pain. CT scan showed fluid in one of my lungs and my symptoms suggest pericarditis.
So...that brings us pretty much up to date! I am currently going to physical therapy once a week to learn how to walk and hopefully run again, and still have very minimal feeling in my leg. Although I have regained a significant amount of my strength back, my leg is still much weaker than it used to be and much weaker than my right leg.
The neurosurgeon believes that the feeling and function will all come back, but it could take a year or longer.
The bleeding into the epidural space was from the blood thinners that I was on, and there was no way to predict or know that something like this would happen.
My lupus is flaring, so my medicines have been increased, but hopefully will take care of the lung issue and the pericarditis.
Through all of the hard times in the last year, my husband and I are lucky enough to have a beautiful, healthy, thriving little girl. She has been our motivation and bright light at the end of the tunnel. What a miracle she is - and hopefully this shows others with lupus that it's possible!!!!!!!!!
I would like to thank everyone who has helped us out in the last few months and for all of the prayers that have been said for us for the last year. We are truly blessed to have such supportive and wonderful people in our lives!
My goal is to be able to walk the whole 3 miles again by June 14th! I'm practicing and getting a little further every day!! I can do it....I can do it...I can do it... :)
