Hello! I am Sara, Watershed Ecologist for the North and South Rivers Watershed Association and South Shore Regional Coordinator for the Massachusetts Bays National Estuary Program. I love anything that gets me in and/or under the water, including swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, and surfing. Professionally and personally, it's very important to me that the water and habitat in my favorite coastal spots stay clean and healthy.
Stormwater runoff is the leading cause of water pollution. After a heavy rain, bacteria in local water bodies like the North River can make it unsafe for activities like swimming and boating. I should know - I've tested the water myself!
I am going to be swimming the typically paddling- and rowing-focused NSRWA Great River Race to highlight the issue of stormwater pollution and water quality in the rivers, and to raise funds for the NSRWA.
I will be swimming the 7-mile race from the start at the Marshfield Canoe Launch to the Washington Street Bridge in Hanover. Full disclosure: There will be a tidal current helping me and I will be wearing fins, but still - 7 miles!
Check out the race route and some landmarks on Google Maps.
Please consider donating to my effort. Thanks.
Update! I finished the race in 3 hours, 8 minutes, and 7 seconds. We'll continue accepting donations for a couple of weeks, so you're not too late!
