The mission of Special Olympics Colorado (SOCO) is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
In Colorado, there are over 10,000 athletes who are training and competing year-round, in their choice of sports. SOCO offers training and competition in 20 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. Athletes are placed into divisions based on age, gender and ability. Competitions take place at area, state, national and international levels. There is no charge to participate in Special Olympics.
Special Olympics Colorado is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization supported entirely by private donations from individuals, corporations, and organizations throughout the state. The program does not receive any financial assistance from the government, United Way or Kennedy Foundation. Individuals, corporations and foundations can support Special Olympics Colorado in a number of ways from cash donations to individual giving to memorials and honorariums to the state tax checkoff program plus many more options. According to a survey in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Special Olympics is “the most credible charity in America.”
