About the Solar Electric Light Fund
Description: The Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) is an international nonprofit organization working to fight climate change AND end global poverty by bringing clean energy (solar power!) and Internet access to the world's poorest people in remote rural areas. When you support SELF, you're providing electricity for village water pumps, schools, health clinics, homes and drip irrigation to grow crops.
With the help of solar energy, children will have clean, safe water to drink; food to eat; vaccinations to prevent disease; light to study by; and computers and Internet access at school to help them learn and lift themselves out of poverty. You'll also help power small tools and equipment their parents can use to earn a better income, so they can afford to send their children to school. Isn't it amazing what a little sunshine can do! :-)
Just imagine, for a moment, your life with no electricity -- no lights, no running water, no telephones or television or computers -- and you'll understand ... it takes ENERGY to end poverty. But for nearly 2 billion people on the planet, access to electricity is only a dream.
You can make a difference. Change a village ... Change the world.
Mission: SELF's mission is to provide solar power and wireless communications to a quarter of the world’s population living in energy poverty.
SELF believes that energy is a human right. To meet global challenges such as food and water scarcity, climate change and poverty, SELF is working to assign greater priority to the importance of sustainable energy among international development banks, aid agencies, foundations, and philanthropic individuals, who are committed to improving the health, education, and economic prospects of the world's poorest citizens.
